Walking in the Newlands Valley
The Newlands Valley is a paradise for walkers, with an extraordinary number of the Lake District’s most beautiful fells accessible directly from the doorstep. From Low High Snab, there is no need to get into the car to enjoy some of the finest mountain walking in England.
The valley is surrounded by an impressive collection of peaks, including Catbells, Maiden Moor, High Spy, Dale Head, Hindscarth, Robinson and Causey Pike, with many more accessible along the connecting ridges.
Perhaps the most celebrated walk is the Newlands Horseshoe, a magnificent circuit of the surrounding fells, taking in Robinson, Hindscarth, Dale Head, High Spy and Maiden Moor. It is one of the great high-level walks of the Lake District, offering spectacular views over the valley, Derwentwater and the distant mountains.
For those seeking something less strenuous, a beautiful walk follows the old track from Low High Snab into the secluded valley of Scope Beck. Just three-quarters of a mile from the house lies the little reservoir, tucked beneath the imposing slopes of Robinson and Hindscarth. It is a wonderfully peaceful spot, surrounded by dramatic scenery, and makes a lovely destination for a shorter outing.
Whether setting out for a gentle walk along the beck, a climb up Hindscarth or an ambitious day traversing the entire horseshoe, the possibilities are almost endless. Few places in the Lake District offer such an extraordinary variety of mountain walks straight from the front door.
